Round 2, Pick 53: Caleb Tiernan, Offensive Tackle, Northwestern

The Steelers need depth and versatility at the offensive line, and Caleb Tiernan provides that, as a tackle that’s likely better suited at guard. Despite having shorter-than-average arms for the position, Tiernan has solid run-blocking fundamentals that an offensive line coach can build on, and ranks fourth out of all tackles in the draft in terms of production. The big concern is pass protection, where he is a liability with shorter arms and inconsistent mechanics.
For a team like Pittsburgh that is looking for steadier line play, Tiernan can be a great value pick if he can build on the skills he already possesses. Getting a prospect like him that can play either guard or tackle makes sense for the Steelers’ depth. If Tiernan can improve in pass protection, he can be a starter in the league within three years.
