No team is looking to turn the page on last year more than the 2026 Cincinnati Bengals. The team stumbled through another poor start and dealt with injuries to top players like Joe Burrow and Trey Hendrickson en route to a 6-11 finish. The biggest problem was a defense that failed to stop any team all season. For the Bengals to win the division and get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2022, they need to fix that awful unit.
Major Overhaul On D-Line
Cincinnati invested heavily in the defense this offseason, adding talent at every level to improve on its horrendous production. Cincy’s defense finished 30th in points allowed, 31st in total yards allowed, and 32nd in rushing yards allowed.
Without Hendrickson (now with division rival Baltimore), the defensive line was missing the star presence capable of wrecking game plans. The Bengals made a blockbuster trade to fill the void, acquiring Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants for the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft.
“Sexy Dexy”, a three-time Pro Bowler, is elite at stuffing the run and pressuring the quarterback in the interior. Cincy also signed Jonathan Allen to form a dominant tandem in the middle. This will allow the Bengals to control the line of scrimmage better and prevent teams from running the ball nonstop without a fight.
On the edge, the Bengals added Boye Mafe and drafted Cassius Howell to get after the quarterback. Along with further development from young pass rushers Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart, the defensive line has the talent to become a top unit.
Revamped Secondary
Getting more talent to the secondary for more competition and depth was also a priority to fix the defense. Safeties Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger were signed to add coverage ability and physicality. Both are capable of starting alongside Jordan Battle and will help the Bengals defense in forcing turnovers.
Ja’Sir Taylor was added as a depth piece at slot corner and will also play on special teams. Third-round pick Tacario Davis might be the most exciting add to the back end because of his physical talent. At 6’4 with 4.41 speed, the organization views Davis as an outstanding prospect with the potential to cover the league’s elite receivers.
The hope is that all these new faces can transform a defense from a weakness to one capable of supporting the rest of the team. They won’t need to become elite overnight; they just need to be able to get the ball back to an explosive offense.
The Return of A Healthy Joe Burrow
The main reason for optimism in 2026 is the return of Cincinnati’s franchise quarterback. Burrow only played in eight games last year and has missed time in two of the last three seasons. It is paramount for the organization to keep him upright and healthy for the offense to perform at its best.
Cincy re-signed offensive linemen Orlando Brown Jr and Dalton Risner to keep Burrow’s protection intact, bringing back all five starting members of last season’s offensive line. Burrow will also have his most important weapons back to re-establish the continuity on offense that makes them one of the NFL’s best.
Ja’Marr Chase is one of the elite wideouts in the game, putting up numbers even without Burrow for half the year. Tee Higgins is a solid number two option who can use his size downfield and in the red zone. Chase Brown ran for over 1,000 yards last year and brings balance to the offense, taking pressure off the passing attack.
This offense has the potential to carry the team as long as key players stay healthy all season.
2026 Cincinnati Bengals Ready To Get Back Into Contention
Cincinnati made investments in the defense to improve upon a bottom-five showing last year. If all the additions transform the unit to at least league-average, it will be a long way towards making the Bengals competitive again.
Health will play a major role as well, because the team can only go as far as Burrow takes them. A healthy roster will make a difference, as there is enough premier talent to win a lot of games. Cincy has all the ingredients to be one of the NFL’s biggest bounce-back teams and make a playoff run. They are betting on a transformation to become an elite football team once again.
