Team USA 1996: Catcher

MIke Piazza
The catcher position on this team has its own thunder and lightning couple. One guy is all offense and no defense, and the other guy is the opposite. Mike Piazza is the offensive side of this duo. At this point in his career, he had only played three full seasons, but was already a three-time all-star and silver slugger.
Piazza is coming off a season (1995) where he just hit .346 with 32 home runs and 93 RBI’s. His OPS in 95 was 1.006. This lineup doesn’t need any additional pop, but they will get it with Piazza. He doesn’t provide much defense, but if the USA is worried about that, then Piazza will be the backup.
Charles Johnson
The best defensive catcher in the MLB at this time is Ivan Pudge Rodriguez, but he’d be playing for Puerto Rico. The best defensive American catcher would be Charles Johnson of the Miami Marlins. At this point, he is coming off just his rookie season, but he still won the first of his four career Gold Glove awards. Aside from handling a pitching staff like a pro, he has an absolute cannon from behind the plate.
