Team USA 1996: Second Base

Team USA 1996, WBC, 2b, craig biggio, chuck knoblauch

Chuck Knoblauch

The best second baseman in the game was the Toronto Blue Jays’ Roberto Alomar, but he would play for Puerto Rico in the 1996 games. America’s best second baseman was probably Chuck Knoblauch. He was the American League rookie of the year in 1991, and from his first at-bat through the 1995 season, he hit .99 with an OPS of .774.

This would also be before his fielding troubles, when he couldn’t throw the ball from second to first to save his life. He actually won the Gold Glove for second base in 1997. He was a two-time All-Star by this point, and an easy decision for America.

Craig Biggio

Craig Biggio would join this team not just as a second baseman, but as a utility player who can not only play the middle infield, but also all three outfield positions, and even a little catcher. He was a Silver Slugger winner in 1989, 1994, and 1995, and was an All-Star in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1995. He may be a no-brainer more than Knoblauch at second.

Biggio had a .285 batting average for his career after the 1995 season, and a career OPS of .784. He would be a tremendous asset not only on the diamond and in the batter’s box, but on the basepaths as well. He averaged 30 steals per 162 over his career to that point and averaged 10 times caught stealing, for a 75% success rate.
