This Dallas Cowboys mock draft focuses on improving a historically poor defense that held back an elite offense. Despite finishing 2nd in total yards per game (391.9) and 7th in points per game (27.7), the Cowboys missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. This was due in large part to their defense ranking dead last in points against per game (30.1). They also conceded the most total points in their entire franchise history (511).

During the offseason, there was a significant focus on retaining key players who contributed to the team’s elite offense, including re-signing RB Javonte Williams and placing the franchise tag on WR George Pickens. The team also made several moves on the defensive side, signing former Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year deal and trading for Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary. They also traded DT Osa Odighizuwa to the 49ers for a third-round pick and sent DT Solomon Thomas to the Titans in exchange for a swap of seventh-round picks.

Overall, acquiring players with a proven track record as reliable starters and trading away players for draft capital at positions that are already stacked would improve the defense. If the Cowboys intend to make a serious playoff push, further improvements on this side of the ball are necessary, as they have significant weaknesses at positions such as linebacker, defensive end, and cornerback. Fortunately, the Cowboys received two first-round picks this year as a result of the Micah Parsons trade last offseason, which could help fill these holes. In total, the Cowboys have eight draft picks, and with two of them in the first round, there is a strong possibility they could either trade up if a player they like falls or trade back to acquire additional picks. For this mock draft, we will assume there are no trades involved.

Next: Round 1, Pick 12
