Round 7, Pick 254: Patrick Payton, Edge, LSU

The Colts are solid at defensive end, with Laiatu Latu and Arden Key, but weak at outside linebacker with Austin Ajiake starting. To start in his place, or provide consistent rotational depth, Indianapolis grabs Patrick Payton out of LSU. He has the prototypical size for the position (6’5 and 250 pounds), and decent athleticism (4.65 forty). He showcased it at Florida State (14.5 tackles for a loss and 10 pass break-ups) before transferring to Baton Rouge.
Payton has exceptional length and bends well to get around tackles with ease. He is twitchy and shows a quick change of direction, and bats down balls at the line of scrimmage frequently. He is available this late because his pass rush moves are limited, and he relies on his talent, which he won’t be able to do as a pro. He could be a guy who gets 10 or more sacks every year, or a career special teamer. High ceiling and low floor.
