The 2026 New England Patriots are looking to prove that last year’s unexpected breakout was no fluke. New England bounced back in a way nobody saw coming last season, becoming AFC Champions and appearing in Super Bowl LX. Despite the one-sided loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the season as a whole was an overwhelming success, since it was head coach Mike Vrabel’s and quarterback Drake Maye’s first run together.
New England has upgraded its roster, which will solidify a championship-level team.
Improving A Thin Roster
One of the most notable trades during the offseason was AJ Brown getting moved from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Patriots. The receiver reunites with Vrabel from their time in Tennessee, and immediately steps in as the number one target for Maye. After some shaky seasons in Philadelphia (that ended in turmoil), Brown’s physicality and frame will make him a massive threat downfield.
A receiving core that relied on Kayshon Boutte and a 32-year-old Stefon Diggs now looks like the deepest group in the NFL. Boutte is coming off a season in which he had a career-high six touchdowns and will pair perfectly with Brown as a physical, downfield threat.
Demario Douglas is an experienced slot receiver who has shown improvements during the beginning of training camp. Kyle Williams, entering his second season, ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine last year and plays even faster. Mack Hollins is rumored to be a hybrid tight end, which would showcase his 6-foot-4, 221-pound frame as both a blocker and a pass catcher.
Another strong addition was the signing of Romeo Doubs. After four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, he will be a strong complementary option. He’s got great hands and is a precise short-to-immediate route runner who will be a perfect secondary weapon for Maye and the offense. Throughout his career, Doubs has caught 21 touchdowns.
New England also drafted Caleb Lomu with the 28th overall pick. The offensive tackle from Utah projects as a swing tackle and incredible depth for an offensive line that has had a huge overhaul the past couple of years. He will begin his career as a reliable backup with the ability to bump inside at guard. Alijah Vera-Tucker is another offensive lineman that the Patriots added who will slot in as the starting left guard. He has a high ceiling, but has struggled to stay on the field since being drafted by the New York Jets in 2021.
Defensively, New England replaced its losses, signing Kevin Byard III and Dre’Mont Jones, also drafting Gabe Jacas. Byard led the league with seven interceptions last year for the Chicago Bears and will replace Jaylin Hawkins. Jones and Jacas will step in for K’Lavon Chaisson as edge rushers. The former is a versatile defensive lineman who set a career high with seven sacks last season. Jacas, drafted out of Illinois, is known for his motor and speed to beat tackles on the edge, but also led all edge rushers with 30 bench press reps at the Combine.
Looking At The 2026 New England Patriots’ Schedule
Experts believed New England’s historically easy schedule played a part in the team’s success last year. That won’t be the case this time around. ESPN ranked the Patriots with the sixth-hardest schedule, as opponents had a 53.1% winning percentage in 2025.
The season starts with a bang, getting a Super Bowl rematch against Seattle in week one. Tough road opponents include the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, and Kansas City Chiefs. Home games against the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos will also be challenges. Divisional matchups with the Buffalo Bills are always battles too, but playing the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins twice will balance it out.

Maye is coming off a season where he was top four in passing yards and touchdowns, led the league in passer rating, and was named the MVP runner-up. Now he’s got an upgraded arsenal. Vrabel, despite his active off-the-field offseason, has obtained talent on both sides of the ball for his second campaign leading the Patriots. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson are a dangerous two-headed backfield, and Hunter Henry is one of the more reliable tight ends in the NFL.
The defensive line remains a strength, led by defensive tackles Milton Williams and Christian Barmore. Christian Gonzalez is the superstar, though, ranking as arguably the best cornerback in the league. He’s on the verge of signing a record-setting extension, and pairs with Carlton Davis II and Marcus Jones for a solid trio of corners.
This year’s slate may be tougher, but the roster is revamped, and expectations are set. The only thing holding back New England from another Super Bowl appearance is itself.
