The 2026 Buffalo Bills’ offseason signaled a changing of the guard. The coaching staff that built the team into one of the NFL’s best is now gone after another playoff letdown.
The front office prioritized adding on defense in hopes of making a more balanced team. Will it all translate to Buffalo reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in the Josh Allen Era?
New Man In Charge
Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady was promoted to head coach, replacing longtime leader Sean McDermott. He faces a lot of pressure walking into a win-now situation with Super Bowl expectations.
Buffalo has qualified for the playoffs seven straight seasons, but never got past the conference championship due to meltdowns in big moments. Whether failing to get a big stop, poor game management, or bad turnovers, the Bills could never rise to the occasion.
Brady is now tasked with elevating the entire organization and creating a culture that flourishes in big games. His success will be based on whether or not Buffalo is playing for a Lombardi trophy.
New Identity On Defense
The Bills made defense their primary focus in their offseason moves to take pressure off 2024 league MVP Allen and the offense. Brady hired Jim Leonhard as the new defensive coordinator to install an attacking hybrid 3-4 scheme, giving the team a more aggressive identity.
That philosophy shift starts up front, where the Bills need to improve against the run. Buffalo gave up 136 yards per game and allowed opponents to rush for 5.1 yards per carry, both bottom five in the league. The new scheme should allow them to have better run fits and open up space for stud DT Ed Oliver to be more disruptive.
The pass rush got an upgrade with the signing of Bradley Chubb, who will be paired with Greg Rousseau to give Buffalo a consistent pass rush off the edge. The team also selected T.J. Parker in the second round of the draft to add upside and physicality. These moves were made to give Leonhard options for versatile pressure on the front end.
Buffalo also made an overhaul to the secondary with players that will fit the new coverage scheme. C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Geno Stone were added as ball hawks capable of causing turnovers at safety. Dee Alford was signed to help at nickel back, while Davison Igbinosun and Jalon Kilgore were drafted to add more athleticism and competition.
Buffalo is now better equipped to attack opponents on defense, which they hope will lead to big stops in crunch time. Being able to get off the field more often and preserving leads will provide the balance necessary to get over the postseason hump.
Explosive Offense Remains
The Bills’ biggest strength is the offense centered around Allen. His combination of arm talent and rushing ability makes him one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the league, capable of taking over games.
The team went out and got their franchise QB a true number-one target in the trade for D.J. Moore. He gives the offense more flexibility in attacking downfield and out wide, which opens up space for other targets over the middle and underneath. He is destined to make an impact for Buffalo.
Running back James Cook led the NFL in rushing last year with 1,621 yards. His emergence as a bell-cow runner makes the offensive attack dynamic and hard for other teams to slow down. Brady will not need to change much for the offense to perform again; just continue to maximize Allen’s strengths. How well he handles overseeing the entire team and calling the offense is worth watching.
The Time Is Now
Owner Terry Pegula made a head coaching change to transform the team from a constant contender to a champion. With Allen in his prime and the sustained success of reaching the playoffs, Buffalo went into this offseason looking to create a more complete team.
The new philosophy on defense and several key additions are designed to get the defense to match what the offense provides. If that unit can meet expectations, the Bills become a favorite to win the Lombardi trophy.
What will ultimately decide if Buffalo is Super Bowl-ready is whether Brady can get this team playing its best football in the postseason. The Bills are betting on a new leader and new culture to finally get them to the finish line.
