This NBA offseason was out of the ordinary, with a number of blockbuster deals. The Philadelphia 76ers made the biggest splash, highlighting the top five NBA offseason moves: landing Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown, then signing LeBron James.
1. The Philadelphia 76ers Acquiring Jaylen Brown Is The Best NBA Offseason Move
Philadelphia acquired Brown for Paul George and draft compensation, including two first-round picks. This is a massive upgrade for the 76ers’ starting small forward position. Brown is a better player on both ends of the floor and is coming off his best season, while George is slowly regressing.
Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game last season. His 2024 Finals MVP and the way he carried a Tatum-less Celtics team to the number two seed in the Eastern Conference last season show he can be a leader on the floor. Overall, the 76ers added a star to their roster who isn’t slowing down any time soon.
2. LeBron James Heads To Philadelphia
After a blockbuster deal for Brown, the 76ers signed James to a two-year, $8 million contract, which is a veteran minimum and a steal. Although James is 41 years old, he is not at all washed up, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game last season. It could be the end of LeBron’s career, and Philadelphia is going to get good production out of him.
It’s an extremely aggressive move, but pairing James with Brown gives Philadelphia the best lineup in basketball.
3. Timberwolves Blockbuster For LaMelo Ball
The Minnesota Timberwolves’ explosive move for LaMelo Ball gives them unlimited upside. He is a phenomenal offensive talent and plays the point guard position properly. With already having a solid defense, putting him alongside Anthony Edwards creates an impressive offensive attack, making the sky the limit.
Minnesota gave away Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps (2028,2029,2030), and three second-round picks. Dealing away Reid is a blow to the frontcourt, but they filled that spot with Jonathan Kuminga. Minnesota was in need of a big change, and the additions of Ball and Kuminga did exactly that.
The Timberwolves have now created a young backcourt with two NBA stars by pairing Ball (25) with Edwards (25). Their different styles of play perfectly complement each other. Ball is among the best at handling and facilitating the ball, while Edwards is an incredible scorer and attacker on all fronts. This backcourt gives the Timberwolves a young core to build around with high potential in the upcoming years.
4. Milwaukee Gets Better End Of Dealing Antetokounmpo
The Milwaukee Bucks traded superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who brought a championship to the city, but actually got the better end of the deal. Despite Antetokounmpo being a force in the NBA, he is now 31 years old and struggling to stay on the court. In return, the Bucks brighten their future by receiving young assets and picks.
The deal sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., three first-round picks, and a first-round pick swap as the focal point of the transaction. Herro, Ware, and Jaquez Jr. are strong NBA players and will only impact the Bucks roster for the better. They form the perfect core to build around, using the picks Milwaukee got in the trade.
The Bucks gave up the best player in the deal, but if they are smart with the picks they received, when all is said and done, they will have won the trade.
5. Portland Adds Ja Morant In Trade
Portland adds to their collection of guards after acquiring Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies. The Trail Blazers sent 32-year-old forward Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis for the 27-year-old point guard. Ultimately, Morant is an easy upgrade over Grant and will merge right into the backcourt alongside Damian Lillard.
Morant, Lillard, and Jrue Holiday form a strong veteran presence and should help with the development of young players like the 2023 third overall pick Scoot Henderson and 23-year-old Shaedon Sharpe.
