Basketball season is fast approaching, and LeBron James’s last NBA season doesn’t matter. The power forward’s signing with the Philadelphia 76ers made serious waves this off-season, but it’s all for nothing. The roster doesn’t have enough pieces to seriously contend in the Eastern Conference, due to consistent injury woes and a lack of depth. Even if the Sixers shock the world and win the NBA Finals, it doesn’t change LeBron’s legacy at all, and it would be the least important championship in his career. With the curtain seemingly coming down, fans are going to be underwhelmed if this is how the “kid from Akron” leaves the NBA, especially as he deals with the fallout of collaborating with Polymarket.
The Sixers Are Still Non-Factors In LeBron James’s Last NBA Season
Despite all the hoopla that came with James signing with the Sixers, the team still has a deficient roster. Joel Embiid’s availability is a concern every year, Jaylen Brown’s best basketball is likely behind him, and the bench is extremely thin behind Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Dean Wade. Tyrese Maxey is a legitimate NBA star, but there is little else around him. Philadelphia banking on a player in the twilight of his career to get over the hump in the East is highly unlikely to pay off. Nick Nurse will have his work cut out for him trying to manage the regular-season minutes of Embiid and James, while simultaneously keeping the squad competitive.
It’s hard to see a scenario where the 76ers represent the conference in the NBA Finals. The Knicks have all the pieces they need to make a dynastic run, while the Heat got significantly better with the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Celtics will still be competitive despite everything they lost this offseason, and even the Cavaliers brought all their pieces back from a season ago. It would be hard for Philadelphia to get out of the Eastern Conference with a well-rounded roster; it’s next to impossible with how the team is currently constructed.
A Sixers’ Championship Does Nothing For LeBron’s Legacy
At this stage in his career, what does another championship even mean for LeBron? Winning a ring with the Sixers would put him at five titles, which doesn’t change the G.O.A.T. debate because of Michael Jordan’s six rings. Is James just stat-padding for his legacy, then? He can break records for regular-season games played and won, as well as career points, field goals made, and assists in the 2026-27 season, but what’s the point?
For someone who cares deeply about how he wants to be remembered as a player, James’s move to Philadelphia was baffling. The roster isn’t good enough to get out of a deep Eastern Conference, and there is something incredibly unsatisfying about not getting true closure on one of the greatest careers in the history of sports. However this season ends for the Sixers, seeing LeBron leave basketball after being in the national spotlight since he was 17 years old is going to hurt for NBA fans all over the world.
