As June 1 closes in, a Patriots-AJ Brown union seems imminent, according to all indications. With the arrival of a legitimate alpha receiver in Foxborough, there is one final piece to the offensive puzzle needed: Stefon Diggs back in New England. The Patriots have been the center of news lately for all the wrong reasons. The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini saga has continued to dominate the headlines each week in the football world. Calls for his resignation, firing, and public apology seem to only grow. Despite all the outside noise, the Patriots have to maintain focus on the upcoming season.

Last year, Diggs was the big offseason signing for New England. Coming off a season-ending knee injury in Houston, the veteran wideout found a team and a coach who were willing to give him a shot to bounce back. His arrival gave the Patriots receiving group much-needed star power, and he delivered. Diggs immediately stepped in as a leader not only for the receiver room but the team as a whole.

The former All-Pro quickly built chemistry with Drake Maye, becoming the second-year quarterback’s security blanket. He finished the regular season with 102 receptions and over 1000 yards, playing a vital role in helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Diggs faced assault accusations as the team entered the playoffs, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a strong comeback season. Following the Super Bowl loss, with legal trouble pending for Diggs, the Patriots released their top wideout.

Stefon Diggs Would bring Leadership, Energy, and Trust In Coach Vrable Into The Building

With last week’s not guilty verdict, the Patriots should look to bring the 32-year-old veteran back. New England added Romeo Doubs this offseason and is set to acquire Brown via trade with the Eagles this summer. With these two additions, why would New England need to bring back Diggs? Leadership. The Patriots are in the midst of the Vrabel’s scandal noise, doubt from the media in their legitimacy as a contender, and high expectations by fans to rebound after their Super Bowl loss. The pressure is on for the young team.

Diggs will bring back a major piece in maintaining the culture that Vrabel brought in last year. Every week throughout the 2025 season, Diggs held the line behind Maye, led pregame speeches, elevated the team’s play, and was the voice of belief on the sideline. He is the type of player who will drown out the noise and, of course, add more firepower to the offense.

The Pats did not add any receivers in the draft. New England focused elsewhere, including adding protection for their quarterback. Their offensive line failed spectacularly in the playoffs, making it a priority to protect their franchise quarterback. A Brown, Doubs, and Diggs starting lineup would easily be a top 10 receiver group. With the AFC in an arms race, the Patriots have to keep up if they intend to make another Super Bowl run.
