Munetaka Murakami: The Next $100M+ Japanese Superstar?

MLB Early Overreactions, white sox, murakami

The Chicago White Sox shocked everyone when they signed 1B Munetaka Murakami out of the NPB to a 2-year, $34 million contract. This signing was surprising for multiple reasons, one being that the White Sox are in the middle of a rebuild and were not expected to make a big splash for one of the most coveted players of the offseason. A second was that the contract was much smaller than anticipated.

There were reports during the offseason that Murakami could command over $180 million and sign a long-term deal. With his market not shaping out how he wanted, he decided to take a short prove-it deal with the White Sox. This is most likely in hopes that he would succeed in Chicago and be in a position to sign that massive deal once his contract is up.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of high-profile players transitioning from the NPB, a professional baseball league in Japan, to the MLB. These players are not just getting 1-year league minimum level contracts, but massive, record-breaking, long-term contracts. Notable players such as Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, and Masataka Yoshida have all signed humongous deals. In the 2026 offseason, there was a new wave of Japanese talent that included Tatsyu Imai, Kazuma Okamoto, and Munetaka Murakami. None of them signed the massive long-term deals that many expected.

Going into the season, there were a lot of eyes on Murakami. It was believed that the transition to MLB pitching would be too much for him to overcome, especially considering he already had a high strikeout rate in the NPB. This concern most likely led to his smaller contract, but in the first game of the season, he put these concerns to rest.

Murakami hit a home run in each of his first three games, showing everyone why he was projected to receive such a huge deal. He has been on a roll ever since showcasing his elite power and making the White Sox appear like geniuses. Through his first 9 games, he has slugged 4 home runs and has an OPS+ of 175, which is well above average. If he keeps this up, he will have every team lining up after his contract expires, many of which will be offering deals worth significantly more than $100 million.
