The former Texas Longhorn is poised to make a major impact in Matt LaFleur’s offense amid a strong finish last season. He appeared in 14 games but made only five starts due to the Packers having several offensive weapons. Golden’s rookie-season performance displayed his big-play ability, willingness to grow, and capability to come through in big moments.
Packers fans were curious about why Golden wasn’t given more chances despite being a first-round pick. Looking at the historical data, LaFleur has a reputation for giving his young receivers limited roles until they can become consistently productive. He allows players to slowly get acclimated to the scheme, which allows them to develop as the season goes on. This blueprint implemented by the organization has proven successful. Matthew Golden Is Set Up For A Breakout Season
LaFleur’s offense is built to succeed with any pairing of receivers, and the different skill sets they possess make it difficult for defenders to stop. Bringing young pass-catchers along slowly and allowing them to develop into their roles has been a recipe for success long term. Over the past three seasons, Watson’s role has increased despite missing time due to injuries. Doubs also raised his level of production over his years in Green Bay, developing into a dependable target for Love. There is a chance that Golden could make the biggest on-field impact and possibly the biggest statistical leap of any other Packers wide receiver during their second season.
If given enough opportunities, Golden should develop into a consistent threat, becoming a 1,000-yard receiver. With the departures of Doubs and Wicks, Packers quarterback Jordan Love should look his way more often. The chemistry between the two was on full display during the playoff loss to the Chicago Bears, when Love connected with Golden 4 times for 84 yards and a touchdown (21 yards per catch). Flashing big-play ability during one of the Packers’ biggest games of the year should give LaFleur and the coaching staff confidence in Golden, as he took advantage of his limited opportunities to prove himself.
Duo Will Be the Focal Point of the Packers Offense
During the preseason, Love talked about how impressed he was with Golden’s ability, how quickly he learned the scheme, and what makes him special.
“I think he’s shown up since day one, and just really shown his play-style, showing what he’s all about. He came in really polished, and has been making plays since day one. He’s got very aggressive hands, he’s a smooth route runner, and he’s got speed. I think for him it’s just to continue to understand the playbook, and wrap his head around everything that we have in, because we have a very deep system. You can see that when he knows what he’s doing, and feeling confident, he’s playing lights out. He’s going to be a stud”.
Love hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since he took over the starting job back in 2023. That could change considering the larger role Golden is expected to inherit. With his explosiveness and polished route running, the second-year receiver should give opposing defensive backs plenty to worry about. Playing alongside Watson and Reed should allow him to get favorable matchups, making it easier for him to get open.
