Round 6, Pick 209: Tyren Montgomery, Wide Receiver, John Carroll (DIII)

The Commanders got this pick from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Brian Robinson. Given it is a bonus pick, why not bet big on a guy with barely any football experience? Tyren Montgomery was a walk-on basketball player at LSU. When his mother fell ill, he dropped out of school, returning to Nicholls as a football player in 2023.

Montgomery transferred to Division III John Carroll, and in 2024, he caught 57 passes for 1,071 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was even better as a senior last year, hauling in 119 receptions for 1,528 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was the first player in school history to get invited to the Senior Bowl, and scouts took notice.

Montgomery has incredible hands. He secures everything thrown at him, whether it is over his head or below his knees. Despite being targeted relentlessly, he never appears tired on tape. His age will be held against him (25), and the fact that he didn’t play Division I will concern some GM’s, but he will get drafted, so why not the Commanders taking a flyer with pick 209?
