Round 3, Pick 79: Malachi Fields, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame

Round three is where a receiver falls into the Falcons lap. In reality, they might trade up to get someone, but not in this mock draft that prohibits trades. Malachi Fields from Notre Dame is the guy. He’s 6’4 and 218 pounds, giving whichever quarterback wins the starting job a couple of big targets to work with. He had 36 catches for the Irish last season, collecting 630 yards (17.5 per catch) and five touchdowns.
Along with his elite height, Fields also boasts a 38″ vertical to go up and get the ball. On the downside, he only runs a 4.61 forty. That may have been a good time for Jerry Rice, but this isn’t 1984, and Fields will need to show elite route running to offset his lack of top-end speed.
Using his size and leaping, Fields’ ability to make contested catches is uncanny. He could be an Anquan Boldin type, and just catch everything thrown at him, even without taking the top off the defense. He needs to work on his route tree if he wants to succeed as a true number two. He lacks sharpness in and out of his breaks.
