The Flau’Jae Johnson WNBA Draft night was supposed to end with her going in the top five picks, as arguably the most well-rounded player in the WNBA Draft class. Teams that passed on the highly decorated player in favor of others could be haunted by that decision in years to come. The former LSU Tiger was still the 8th overall selection after the Seattle Storm facilitated a trade with the Golden State Valkyries, but it’s questionable as to why she wasn’t chosen earlier.
The Storm could have used the 3rd overall pick on Johnson, but felt like Awa Fam Thiam’s fit alongside Dominique Malonga made sense, and that they could become a duo who could dominate the league. There were no surprises with the top three picks, but the biggest one was Johnson falling out of the top-five.
