The addition of Kyler Murray will do little to fix the Vikings’ playoff woes. Since the addition of the former Arizona Cardinal, analysts have been debating whether or not the Vikings are set for a legitimate Super Bowl run. Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell is widely respected and has shown the ability to elevate the play of his quarterbacks, but will it be enough to get SKOL nation to the big dance?

Up until this point, Murray has not lived up to his first-round draft pick status. Injuries have plagued him, finishing only three of his seven NFL seasons. On the field, Murray has also struggled despite showing flashes of elite play, never eclipsing 4,000 yards passing and never throwing over 25 touchdowns. He led Arizona to a single playoff appearance in 2021, which was also his lone winning season. Murray has also been accused of lacking discipline and focus with film study, instead relying on his athleticism.

So, why are many analysts viewing the new Vikings quarterback as a perfect pairing with O’Connell? Since arriving in Minnesota in 2022, the young offensive head coach has established himself as a rising star. O’Connell’s ability to enhance quarterback play has been a hallmark, seen most recently in the 2024 performance of Sam Darnold. As a former first-round draft pick, the USC Trojan never lived up to expectations, bouncing around the league until finding himself with the Vikings.

Under the tutelage of O’Connell, Darnold turned his entire career around. In his lone season as a Viking, he passed for over 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading Minnesota to a 14-3 record. Following his career revival, Darnold signed a massive contract with the Seattle Seahawks and won a Super Bowl. Now, O’Connell will be asked to work his magic again with Murray at the helm.

Can O’Connell Help Murray Reach His Full Potential, And Overcome The Vikings’ Playoff Woes?

Minnesota fans are hoping that Murray will be the answer to their lack of playoff success under O’Connell. In tandem with elite wideout Justin Jefferson, the Vikings’ offense has the potential to be a highlight reel every Sunday. Murray’s talent will be on full display, maximized to its full potential. Jefferson will benefit greatly from the new addition as the number one receiver. Murray historically heavily targets the team’s primary receiver. Jefferson should find himself among the top five receivers in the league, once again making him an excellent fantasy pick.

Unfortunately, it takes more than making ESPN’s top-10 plays each week to be a contender. Murray will bring a mixed bag of highlights and heroics, along with a lack of discipline and mistakes. His arrival adds much-needed help at the quarterback position and should have the team competitive in most of their matchups.

When it comes to the playoffs, however, the Vikings will find themselves on the outside looking in once again. Murray is another band-aid at quarterback that has become a trait for the O’Connell era in Minnesota. He is not a long-term solution and will not be the piece to take the Vikings to the promised land. A year from now, look for Minnesota to be all in on a trade for a real franchise quarterback, perhaps in the person of Joe Burrow.
