The Los Angeles Rams Trent McDuffie trade made waves yesterday, with the team sending a trade package to the Kansas City Chiefs for the All-Pro cornerback that included the 29th overall pick in this April’s NFL Draft. One of the more surprising moves of the offseason, the trade resulted in the Rams surpassing the Seattle Seahawks for the best odds to win Super Bowl 61 at +750, per Sports Illustrated.
How does acquiring a cornerback significantly impact a team’s Super Bowl fortunes?
Is The Rams Trent McDuffie Trade Worth It?
The Rams needed a defensive playmaker in the 2025 NFL Playoffs, as the team surrendered the fourth-most passing yards in the postseason, averaging 276 yards per game. Despite a vaunted pass rush with 47 sacks in the regular season, the Rams needed an elite defender to match up with dynamic receivers like Jaxon Smith-Njigba over the course of the postseason. This is where McDuffie comes in.

A two-time All-Pro selection, McDuffie flourished in the defensive backfield of the Chiefs under the tutelage of the best defensive play caller in the league, Steve Spagnuolo. McDuffie is a versatile defender, posting three interceptions and 34 pass breakups in coverage over his career, and is an asset near the line of scrimmage, with 5.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits credited to him.
McDuffie may be the missing piece, but the Rams have some big decisions looming in free agency. As of right now, corners Ahkello Witherspoon and Cobie Durant, as well as linebacker Troy Reeder and safety Kamren Curl are set to hit the market when free agency begins. In what is shaping up to be a weak free agency class, McDuffie was likely the only way to significantly upgrade the Rams before the draft.
It is not hard to see why Los Angeles is the new Super Bowl favorite. Even with the potential losses in free agency, the Rams have fewer deficiencies on their roster than teams like Seattle, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Kansas City. Sean McVay could be hoisting his second Super Bowl title come next February.
