Former New England Patriots head coach and Hall of Fame snub, Bill Belichick, received a rude awakening to the world of college football in 2025. Thankfully, the North Carolina transfer portal has tried to help him level the playing field for 2026. In a world unlike the NFL, where there is no salary cap and teams can stack talent on top of talent, it takes more than a genius head coach to win football games.

The Tar Heels significantly bolstered their passing game for next season, with a
commitment from Western Carolina quarterback Taron Dickens. The 5’11 redshirt
sophomore set the Southern Conference on fire the last two years. In 13 career starts,
he has amassed 4,936 yards (380 yards per game) and 50 touchdowns (3.8 per game),
while completing 74.1% of his passes. In half his starts, he threw for over 400 yards.
2025 North Carolina Offense

This has to come as a breath of fresh air for Belichick, whose quarterback room last
year was borderline anemic. North Carolina averaged only 19.2 points per game last
season (120th in the nation), in large part because their quarterbacks combined for a
63.9% completion, 183 yards per game, and just 13 touchdowns. The entire
quarterback room has moved on, with Bryce Baker going to Virginia Tech, Max Johnson
choosing Georgia Southern, and Gio Lopez going to Wake Forest.

Belichick has brought in Billy Edwards from Wisconsin and Miles O’Neil from Texas
A&M, but neither of them has shown a thimble’s worth of what Dickens brings to the
table. North Carolina also helped out its new signal callers by bringing in Trech
Kekahuna and Mason Humphrey at receiver and LSU’s Kaleb Jackson at running back.
They still don’t sport the same kind of talent as CFP teams, but they are in the ACC, so
they really just have to beat Miami.

North Carolina Transfer Portal 2026

Along with Dickens and some offensive pieces, North Carolina has secured the
offensive line Andrew Threatt, Shaq McRoy, Brandon Homaday, and Rowan Byme.
Tight End Jelani Thurman comes over from Ohio State, and Jordan Washington
transferred in from Texas. New offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has plenty of
weapons to build around, starting with Dickens at quarterback.

The defense has been somewhat rebuilt with players from Florida, Penn State, and
Michigan State. The team should be firing on all cylinders when they open their season
on August 29th against TCU.

Dickens should win the starting quarterback spot easily, and then there is no telling what
type of season he and North Carolina will have. They should flip their wins and losses in
2026, going 8-4, and possibly challenging for a playoff spot. If they don’t get it, with
Belichick at the head, there will be an even bigger push for the 24-team playoff the Big
10 is pitching furiously. For right now, it’s a good time to be a Tar Heels football fan, as
the sky is the limit with their new quarterback.
