The New York Jets enter 2026 training camp focused on competition. Following a disappointing 3-14 season, the organization added experience across the roster in hopes of taking another step out of this latest rebuild.
Head coach Aaron Glenn continues to build a culture of discipline and physicality, with numerous established veterans added to lead the way. Gang Green hopes these moves position them to be one of the NFL’s biggest turnarounds in 2026.
Veteran Leadership For The Defense
New York went into the offseason with substantial cap space and draft capital to plug the holes on the roster. Defense was a priority as they finished last season among the worst defenses in the league statistically in stopping the run and generating turnovers.
One of the first moves was trading for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. He immediately upgrades the secondary as a versatile playmaker with the elite ball skills that Jets defenders sorely lacked last season. (The team became the first in NFL history to finish an entire season with zero interceptions)
Fitzpatrick has shown the ability to play deep safety, cover in the slot, or in the box throughout his career. He will be one of the main guys Glenn, now calling the defensive plays himself, will lean on to avoid blown coverages and communication breakdowns.
The Jets also brought back linebacker Demario Davis to lead the defense. The veteran linebacker returns for a third stint with the team that drafted him, bringing leadership and toughness. He will be the model of the culture coach Glenn wants to build, thanks to his IQ and preparation, which will raise the standards for the entire unit.
Davis, at 37 years old, is still capable of performing at a high level and able to play different roles in the middle. David Onyemata was also signed as a veteran to help anchor the defensive line. He brings leadership along with the skills to be a force on the interior line.
The goal for New York is to build a tougher and smarter defense that will compete better against opponents every week. These key veteran defenders added have been productive over long careers and raise the talent level. They bring much-needed leadership to help guide the younger players toward success.
A Catalyst For The Offense
Another big offseason move for the Jets was trading for quarterback Geno Smith. Reuniting with their former second-round pick from 2013 gives Gang Green a proven starter who can run the offense.
The Jets suffered from poor QB play last year, which held the team back and put more pressure on their bad defense. Smith will be able to keep the offense on track and play better complementary football to Glenn’s vision of the team.
The Jets have two playmakers in running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The team also drafted two other potential stars for the offense in their 2026 draft class in Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. Having a legitimate quarterback capable of distributing the ball to everyone will maximize all the talent and help develop the offense into a top unit.
Smith also comes with added motivation to rebound after an ugly season with the Las Vegas Raiders. He has overcome adversity in his career, bouncing around multiple teams after the Jets to finally find success later on. He now returns to his original team to help them compete after so many years of being bottom dwellers. With a return to solid play, Smith could be the catalyst to get New York out of their rebuild and closer to contention.
Laying The Foundation For A Future New York Jets Contender
By bringing proven players to start at key positions, New York has created a stronger balance of experience and talent that will serve them well this season.
The offense should now be more dangerous with Smith and a proven playcaller in Frank Reich joining the team. The additions on defense provide the consistency and experience needed to run Glenn’s scheme to its highest potential, capable of creating turnovers.
The Jets have assembled strong young talent to build around on both sides of the ball. The organization is in a position to add even more talent in future years with the draft capital they have accumulated. The established veterans will help forge a clearer team identity that allows young players to flourish.
While they may not be ready to contend yet, New York now has a blueprint to follow on what it will take to have success in the NFL. Gang Green hopes that being better competition for other teams this season sets them up for future sustained success and a playoff berth.
