It may seem a bit early for panic, but the New England Patriots face a must-win game against the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into Week 2. It is rare when a season is determined in the first two weeks of football. There are seventeen games and plenty of time to change trajectory. New England’s lackluster performance opening night in Seattle, however, plus the loss of their top weapon, and a difficult schedule already have the team in an uphill battle for playoff contention.
Entering the 2026 season, the defending AFC champs armed up, adding receivers AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs and re-signing all-star corner Christian Gonzalez to a record $134 million contract. The goal: win the Super Bowl. Opening night could not have gone worse for the Pats, though. New England failed to defeat the Drew Lock-led Seahawks, largely due to a three-interception performance by Drake Maye. Adding insult to injury, Brown sprained his right ankle in the third quarter, placing him on IR with a return date in November.
A 0-2 Start For The New England Patriots Could End Any Playoff Hopes
Last year, the Patriots benefited from a historically easy schedule. In 2026, the Pats face the seventh-hardest schedule. Historically, teams that start 0-2 find themselves in an unlikely uphill battle to make the playoffs. Since 1990, only 12.2% of teams that went winless through the first two weeks were able to claw themselves out of the hole and into the postseason.
A 0-2 start to the season could quickly become a 0-4 September. New England follows up Pittsburgh by hitting the road, first traveling to Jacksonville, then Buffalo. The Jaguars are coming off a four-touchdown performance by Trevor Lawrence, and appear to be kicking off 2026 where it left off last season. Meanwhile, Josh Allen and company are firing on all cylinders, dropping 37 points on the vaunted Texans defense. In combination with facing eight playoff teams from 2025 and Buffalo twice, a winless start could be an early nail in the coffin for New England.
The Patriots now have to find a way to win when they host the Steelers without a true number one receiver. The Brown acquisition was set to be the focal point of the New England passing attack. With their star wideout set to miss four to six weeks, the Patriots must lean on Doubs, Mack Hollins, Demario Douglas, and Efton Chism in a suddenly thin receiver group.
Teams Will Use The Seahawks Defense As A Blueprint To Rattle Drake Maye
The Seattle defense has given the league a blueprint for how to throw Maye and Josh McDaniels off their game. Defensive coordinators just need to dial up the pressure, as shown on opening night, forcing Maye to make poor decisions since he has no true number one receiver to make the defense pay.
While it is only week two, Maye and company are up against the wall. The media has shredded the Patriots’ offense all week, and the noise is already getting loud. A young team, trying to find their identity, under high-expectation pressure, can quickly spiral out of control. Winning is contagious, but so is losing.
The success of the Patriots starts and ends with Maye. Last year, he was lauded with accolades for his accuracy and decision-making. He needs to bounce back and return to form at the helm of the offense. Simultaneously, the New England receivers have to step up, especially Doubs. The former Packer failed to haul in a catch on three targets in week one, including a critical drop on a wide-open crosser that could have sealed a win for the Pats. Doubs will need to play a pivotal role if the Patriots’ passing game is to get on track.
It is early in the season, but the Patriots have little room for error. Thankfully, the Steelers are one of the more winnable games on the schedule. In a highly competitive AFC race, New England cannot afford to lose games against its weaker opponents. The Patriots’ defense, led by Gonzalez, will need to keep Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh’s offense from controlling the game and give Maye opportunities to settle in.
If New England wins Sunday afternoon, the Patriots have a clear path to a minimum of a 3-3 start (losses to Jacksonville and Buffalo; wins over the Raiders and Jets), and set up a massive game in Chicago Thursday Night with a hopeful return of Brown to the receiver room. The importance of this week’s two-game matchup cannot be overstated. The season is on the line.
