The World Baseball Classic has delivered so far in terms of fan excitement and electrifying moments. Despite the occasional soundbite from established MLB stars such as Bryce Harper suggesting that the international tournament does not carry the same emotional weight for the United States team, it seems clear that players from nearly every other country are deeply invested in representing their nation and leaving everything on the field.

“Obviously the WBC has been great, but it’s not the Olympics, right?”

Harper offered the comment after going 1 for 5 against a group of Brazilian pitchers who had never thrown an inning in Major League Baseball. The remark appeared to suggest that the achievement of winning the WBC might fall short of what an Olympic gold medal would mean to Harper and the cast of MLB All Stars on Team USA. At age 32, Harper may have the chance to test that theory when baseball returns to the Olympics at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Despite Harper’s thoughts on the matter, the United States finds itself in an interesting position in which advancement is far from guaranteed. The Americans have not been fully tested yet, and the other two undefeated teams in Pool B, Italy and Mexico, both feature rosters filled with players who have significant MLB experience. The United States will likely be favored, but their opponents will approach those games with the intensity of an October playoff matchup.

There have already been several moments in the tournament that baseball fans will remember for years. Behind each of these emotional moments is a Statcast data set that helps reveal just how dramatic and surprising the WBC has been. Here are a few of them.
