With the addition of Kyler Murray, Justin Jefferson is set to reclaim the WR1 crown. To noone’s surprise, the Minnesota Vikings signed the Arizona quarterback following his release. Analysts throughout the offseason had connected Murray and the Vikings as the obvious pairing under coach Kevin O’Connell. While Minnesota fans are excited after a lackluster year by JJ McCarthy in 2025, perhaps none are as excited as superstar receiver Jefferson, who looks to reclaim the title of top receiver in the league.
Jefferson has been an elite talent since he arrived in the NFL, breaking Randy Moss’ rookie reception record. In 2024, with former first-round pick Sam Darnold at the helm, the Minnesota offense shredded opponents, ranking ninth in scoring and seventh in passing yards, finishing with a 14-3 record. Jefferson greatly benefited, hauling in over 1500 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fast forward to 2025, Jefferson still posted his sixth 1,000-yard season in a “down year” despite the poor play by quarterback McCarthy.
Historically, Murray Has Heavily Targeted The Team’s Number One Receiver, Which Bodes Well For Justin Jefferson Jefferson

Murray has not lived up to his hype so far in his short NFL career. The former first-round pick has shown moments of brilliance and heroics, but has struggled with injuries and discipline. Despite his up-and-down seasons, Murray’s talent is unquestionable, and his pairing with O’Connell will maximize his potential. The key benefactor will undoubtedly be his new primary receiver, Jefferson.
On the field, Jefferson is a nightmare of a matchup. At 6’1″ and a 4.43 speed, he has the ability to take the top off of defenses and go up top and get it. Paired with his deep threat abilities is his crisp route running. It is rare that a taller receiver has the twitch of a slot receiver. A perfect example is when Jefferson faced off with the Colts in 2022. In man-to-man coverage, the star wideout ran a whip route that left all-pro corner Stephon Gilmore grabbing air as he watched Jefferson jog into the end zone. Add his elite hands and acceleration off the line, and Jefferson is the most complete receiver in the game today.
Perhaps the most exciting matchup to circle this upcoming season will be when Jefferson faces off with Patriots lockdown corner Christian Gonzalez. The young defender has solidified himself as a top-5 defensive back in the league, putting the nation on notice when he shut down Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the Super Bowl. Jefferson is a different animal. While many analysts may have forgotten him, this game will set the record straight on who truly is the best receiver in the league.
The addition of Murray may not fix Minnesota’s playoff woes. Unfortunately, he is more of a band-aid than a solution to their current quarterback problem, but he will be pivotal in Jefferson’s ascent to the top. With Murray sending a heavy percentage of the targets to him, Vikings fans will get a front-row seat to a highlight-filled season.
