The Chargers do need depth at cornerback, and the selection of Arkansas’ Julian Neal will give the team a little more flexibility with the position. The biggest thing he brings to the table is his size, standing 6’2 and weighing in at 203 pounds. He is long, with good-sized hands, and will trouble quarterbacks who like to throw over the heads of defenders. His 40″ vertical will make sure of that.

Neal had 10 pass breakups and two interceptions last season, and quarterbacks who threw at him suffered a 72.7 passer rating. Where he really shines is in run defense, and he could play some strong safety and even outside linebacker in some packages. He is a back four Swiss Army knife.

He has average speed, but slows quickly, and could be burned on the outside by quicker receivers. The big thing scouts talk about with defensive backs is hip fluidity, and Neal’s are stiff. He will need to be able to turn and run quickly in the NFL. Overall, he is a project with a decent amount of upside.
