According to reports, a Buffalo Bills Philip Rivers marriage could be in the works. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported today that Rivers is interviewing to be Josh Allen’s next head coach. Surprised and elated by the headlines that they had fired Sean McDermott, statistically the best head coach in the NFL the past seven years, the team in Western New York apparently needed to stay on the front page.

First, they threw McDermott and his staff under the bus for drafting receiver Keon Coleman out of Florida State in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. This was debunked by a video released of Brandon Beane talking up the former Seminole in the Bills’ war room. The team’s next attempt to get clicks was bringing Rivers in for a head coaching interview.

Philip Rivers Coaching Experience

Rivers has been the head coach and primary offensive play caller for St Michael Catholic High School since 2021. He finished the 2025 season with a 13-1 record before the Indianapolis Colts asked him to come back and play quarterback for them. Rivers’ high school team was led by four-star quarterback prospect Gunner Rivers. Has a football coach at the amateur level ever had their son lead their program from irrelevance to relevance before? Fans of Jackson State and Colorado football can answer that question, so a better question is, where is Coach Prime’s head coach interview? Is coaching high school football a better parallel to the pro game than coaching Division I college football?

The fact of the matter is, NFL owners told Sanders he needed some sort of coaching experience if he ever wanted to be an NFL head coach. He had to be a coordinator at least. Meanwhile, Rivers is brought in by the team with the most desirable head coaching position of the offseason.

Do The Buffalo Bills Understand Their Situation?

Buffalo has made the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons and won five of the last seven AFC East titles. Their quarterback is essentially earmarked for the Hall of Fame, and they still have an elite defense. Every coach and coordinator looking for work wants the head coach job, so why not bring in candidates who are actually qualified?

Allen is 29 years old, and with the punishment he takes every year, closer to retirement than his rookie season. The team’s window is slamming shut, and it looks like they are either giving up or playing a practical joke on the rest of the league. Bring in someone like Vance Joseph, or even a failed former head coach like Mike McCarthy or Mike McDaniel. Bill Belichick can’t be loving it in Chapel Hill.

The Buffalo Bills Philip Rivers Story Has To Be A Joke

Buffalo can’t do silly things to get silly headlines, just because the owner thinks it’s hilarious. They are serious contenders for the next Super Bowl, and they need to take their head coaching search seriously. If they want to bring Rivers in as a quarterbacks coach, that’s fine. It makes sense.

If Buffalo wants to make the former Chargers quarterback their QC, while somewhat asinine, it would be a move fans could get behind. The idea that a guy who was throwing passes a few weeks ago could be running the franchise tomorrow is terrifying. When Woody Johnson sees this, since he is the worst owner in all of pro sports, will the Jets bring Zach Wilson in for an interview? Please let the NFL world snap back to reality, and quickly.
