Reports emerged yesterday that were expected to affect the 2026 NFL Draft. The headlines read Zachariah Branch Arrested, and the rest of the story was left up to the imagination. Over the last 24 hours, more details have emerged, including a portion of the police report. Despite the additional information being made available to the general public, the entire incident is still blurry.
After being released on $39 bail, the official charges were released, and they were obstructing public sidewalks/streets, prowling, and obstructing a law enforcement officer. No further details at that time, leaving the average person to believe that Branch was impeding officers from doing their job, blocking them as they tried to advance along the sidewalk. The portion of the police report released today paints a more disturbing picture.
“A male, later identified as Zacharia Branch, continued to stand on the sidewalk without making an attempt to move. I continued to give Zacharia Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk. Zacharia Branch smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, then remained standing upon the public sidewalk, so as to obstruct, hinder, and impede free passage upon the sidewalk as well as impede free ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business. Due to those actions and Zacharia Branch’s failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor Obstruction of LEO and received a citation for Obstructing Public Sidewalks.”
How Revealing Is The Zachariah Branch Arrested Report?

Tom Pelissero, of the NFL Network, released this portion of the report, but no other details. Does he not have access to the full report, or did he not want the general public to have access, choosing to let them see what he wanted them to see? This is just a paragraph in what is definitely a multi-page report, so what does the rest of it say? Why did the officer initially engage Branch? Was he called to the scene, or did he witness a problem happening?
Why would Branch be ordered to move from a public sidewalk? Based on what was released, it appears that Branch was standing on a sidewalk, was not given a reason to move (other than “I’m a cop, and you have to do anything I say, no matter what”), and was arrested for refusing to follow an unlawful order. Again, maybe this is what the NFL Network wants the world to think, and there’s a lot more to the story. Maybe there’s nothing more to the story, and it’s just a racist cop uncomfortable with a black male occupying a public sidewalk.
Until the full report is released, there is no way to know for sure. Even when the report is released, it will be one person’s view of the events. The public will still need to hear Branch’s side of the story, and then determine for themselves what happened. There are two sides to every story. The truth generally lies somewhere in between.
The NFL and all of its teams will do their own investigations, and where Branch is drafted will likely be a reflection of what they find, and not what the public hears. If it’s a mountain, crafted from a molehill, the receiver will be taken somewhere in round two. If it’s more than what it appears, he will likely fall to round five or six. One thing that’s for certain, the little bit of light that shone recently into this dark room has actually made it harder to see the truth.
