Cam Schlittler’s Fenway Park debut for the New York Yankees was one to remember for reasons on and off the diamond. He pitched eight innings on a night when he was not as sharp. He allowed only four hits, one earned run, and one walk, and struck out five. This helped the Yankees secure the victory and series sweep over their hated rival, the Boston Red Sox.

In the days leading up to him taking the mound on Thursday night, his family was receiving death threats online over Schlittler playing for the Yankees and not his hometown Red Sox. Boston had multiple opportunities to draft him in the prior rounds, but instead, it was New York who scooped him up, drawing more ire from the Red Sox.

Cam Schlittler’s Massachusetts Roots

Schlittler is from Walpole, Massachusetts, only a 40-minute drive from Boston. He grew up an avid Red Sox fan, but when drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft, that all changed. He has quickly proven himself to New York fans by working his way up to the big leagues last summer.

Since his debut against the Seattle Mariners in July, he has a polished 2.57 earned run average and 125 strikeouts. He really dazzled under the lights at Yankee Stadium in the American League Wild Card Series against the Red Sox last October.

In his postseason debut in a must-win for both teams, Schlittler lit up Boston over eight innings of shutout baseball, striking out 12 batters in a masterpiece. He definitely heard and played off the support from the Yankees crowd in the Bronx that night.

In Boston, Schlittler has become public enemy number one with his thrashing of the Red Sox offense on that fateful evening. He has been unfairly raked over the coals by Boston media and fans for renouncing his fandom and supporting the Evil Empire in New York.

Schlittler proved he was “Tough Schlitt” with his performance at Fenway Park. Despite how much the Red Sox diehards booed and jeered at him, it did not reflect in his output. He brought the energy each time he took the mound, and the rest of the Yankees fed off of it to give him help defensively and offensively. The emotions that Schlittler plays with are one of the best things to see for any young athlete because it displays the raw, at times unfiltered, passion that they have for the game they love.

He has silenced the Red Sox haters for now, and with good reason based on his impressive work. His attitude towards Boston is one that all Yankees fans share, and that is what makes the rivalry so special and engaging. Schlittler is destined to seek and destroy Boston in future matchups to help New York get back to the World Series.

The Yankees have a true future All-Star selection and Cy Young candidate in their rotation with Cam Schlittler. Fellow aces Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Carlos Rodon will teach him a tremendous amount as he grows leaps and bounds in the seasons to come.
