The Modern New York Yankees’ Third Base Scenario

McMahon predominantly holds down the hot corner position for the Yankees, but since his acquisition last summer, he has struggled at the plate mightily. Last season, in 54 games with the Bronx Bombers, he had a mere .208 batting average and only slugged .333 (his career low).  Defensively, he has been serviceable, yet the batting is what the team often lives and dies by. Despite the small sample so far in 2026, McMahon is on pace for the worst season of his MLB career.

New York Yankees’ Third Base Dilemma, Amed Rosario

The Yankees also feature baseball journeyman Amed Rosario on their bench. Rosario was acquired last summer as well, and re-signed over the winter to remain a Yankee. He has only played in 25 games with the Yankees, but boasts a .298 batting average and has performed well when placed at third base by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Oswaldo Cabrera, who suffered a gruesome ankle fracture last season sliding into home plate against the Seattle Mariners, is now healthy and recovering in Triple-A with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He could be called up soon to help serve at third and improve the lineup. Cabrera also provides more versatility for the infield as a whole.

The Yankees’ top prospect, George Lombard Jr., is in Double-A currently with the Somerset Patriots. The 20-year-old has steadily risen through the minor leagues since being drafted in 2023 and has performed well at each stop. His primary position is shortstop, but he can play third base, which may require a position change should New York elevate him this season.
