If there is one word to describe the New York Mets, it is disasterpiece. This team has fallen well below expectations, and there are plenty of problems. Many fans and analysts have pointed the finger at Carlos Mendoza and David Sterns as the issue, but neither is the main problem, which is the owner of this baseball club, Steven Cohen.
Mendoza and Sterns Have Been A Disaster For The New York Mets This Year
There hasn’t been a fall-off this hard in a long time for Mets fans. Mendoza and Sterns were once seen as the potential saviors in a new era for the baseball club. Sterns came in with a great deal of hype, especially when it came to handling Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, but the shine has faded. He’s made more bad deals than good (Frankie Montas, trading Brandon Nimmo), and it’s clear the fanbase has completely turned on him.
Carlos Mendoza is almost certainly getting fired, and it’s hard not to feel for him. It’s clear during interviews that his confidence is completely shot. The fact that the owner is keeping him and Sterns around, even though they are dead men walking, is a disaster in and of itself.

Cohen Acts Like He Is Broke
The biggest issue with Cohen is that he runs the club like he’s broke. Yes, he signed Juan Soto to that gigantic 765 million contract, which was great, but this isn’t the NBA, where one player changes the team. A baseball team needs 15 elite players to actually compete, and the Mets had only have 4 of them when he joined the team. Cohen acted stingy when it came to the Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso deals, yet he was willing to break the bank for Devin Williams, Bo Bichette, and Luke Weaver. Getting Freddy Peralta via trade didn’t work out, since he’s one of the worst pitchers in baseball statistically.
What makes this behavior puzzling, more than anything else, is that Cohen is one of the richest owners in baseball. He has no excuse to be cheap. He also said he would do anything to win a World Series, and if the team didn’t do that in three to five years, it would be a disappointment. So, why won’t he back up the Brinks truck? This guy is the definition of a fraud and has done more to support the Knicks at the front row of games then has with the Mets.
Cohen Came Across Terribly On Social Media In April
Cohen has been largely absent from the media and socials recently, which may be for the best. The last time he spoke publicly, he criticized the fans for not coming out for a free ticket giveaway, which is a horrible look. Considering it was a last-minute giveaway, he probably should not have changed the game’s start time by three hours. Maybe more fans would have come, but no, it’s the fans’ fault. It’s even more damning that those tweets are still up on his social media account.
Cohen has gone completely off the rails and lost the Mets’ fanbase at the same time. He appears to be more concerned with passing a casino bill than building the team properly. The result is a complete mess on the field.
Sell The Team Cohen
The honeymoon period is over with this owner. It’s time to request that Steven Cohen get the heck out of this town and sell the Mets. He is an absolute fraud and has no idea how to build a baseball team. He acts like he has no money to build a club, and when he’s caught, he decides to allow spending & overpaying for Sterns’ guys. Especially in Bo Bichette, who’s been a disaster, and Devin Williams is terrible.
This team will never win a World Series with Cohen as the owner. Yes, he spends money, but he does everything else wrong as an owner. With his actions, he is making Mets fans miss the Wilpon family, and they were awful owners. This better be a wake-up call for Cohen, but with how over his head he is, this franchise can’t be trusted with him. He should look in the mirror and learn how to get a good product in the ballpark. If he doesn’t or refuses to, then sell the team to somebody else.
