The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally settled their quarterback situation (for better or worse) for 2026, but the Antonio Brown, Hines Ward debate about who the all-time Steelers receiver is has been raging online for days. On a TikTok livestream, Brown reacted to a fan’s take on the comparison: “… if you’re comparing 86 to 84, let’s compare. Could we look up, ‘How many touchdowns does Hines Ward have with Ben Roethlisberger as his quarterback?'”

Brown is right in that he has the edge over Ward as the best Steelers receiver ever, and it’s more than just touchdowns (72 scores to Ward’s 41 with Roethlisberger at the helm). Brown was on a trajectory of being a top ten WR in league history, while no other Pittsburgh wideout has come close to his production.

The Antonio Brown, Hines Ward All-Time Steelers Debate Has A Clear Champion

NFL fans forget how dominant Brown was during his prime. He had six straight seasons of at least 100 catches and 1,200 receiving yards, the only player in league history to accomplish the feat. His prolific production during that era drew comparisons to Jerry Rice, and only a few WRs have ever earned that comparison. Brown’s behavior on and off the field since leaving the Steelers has certainly hurt his chances to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but he’s clearly the best Pittsburgh wideout of the modern era and maybe the best ever.

Ward is beloved by Steelers fans, but has a much weaker case than Brown for the best receiver in franchise history. The former Georgia Bulldog only had two seasons where he went over 1,000 yards receiving with Roethlisberger at quarterback, and was never First Team All-Pro (Brown earned the distinction four times). He gained popularity with fans by primarily being an elite blocker, so much so that the league had to introduce new blindside block rules in response to his play. Ward has had a difficult time getting inducted into the Hall of Fame, and he realistically might never get in because he wasn’t a top-tier NFL receiver at any point in his career.

Brown is clearly the better pass-catcher between him and Ward, but how does he stack up against the first great Steelers receiver, Lynn Swann? One would think that the four-time Super Bowl champion would have the edge, but the facts disprove that notion. He was only a First Team All-Pro once, and he never had more than 900 yards in a season despite being on one of the most stacked teams in league history. Swann’s Super Bowl XIII performance is legendary, but he pales in comparison to Brown from a talent and production standpoint.

Brown is not without his warts, with how his NFL career ended and the different scandals off the field. From the implosion of the Killer B’s in Pittsburgh, not even playing a down for the Raiders, to the lasting image of him taking his pads off on the field with the Buccaneers, he put a sour taste in many football fans’ mouths. He also had multiple instances of legal drama from 2019 onward, ranging from unpaid child support to attempted murder. Brown’s fall from grace has been hard to watch, knowing what he was in the late 2010’s: the best wide receiver ever for the Steelers.
