Pat Kelsey recruits for the Louisville Cardinals, as no other coach before him has. The times have changed since the days of Denny Crum and Rick Pitino, but Kelsey has the Cardinals back on the map as a top-flight destination to play for. His ability to apply NIL factors and build relationships with young men wanting to win is incredible. Kelsey’s energy and passion are unmatched and always on display, from the sidelines to public settings. He understood that you must start somewhere, and he has brought the excitement back to campus and the KFC Yum! Center

Pat Kelsey’s Recruiting History

2024

Kelsey was hired as the head coach of Louisville in 2024, building the 27th-ranked transfer class out of 162 Division I programs. He built the entire roster from scratch, and he began the “Revi-VILLE” for the Cardinals.

He was able to convince a few big-name transfers to come play for the Cards: Chucky Hepburn, a point guard from Wisconsin, and Terrence Edwards Jr., a shooting guard/small forward from James Madison. Both played a tremendous part in Louisville returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 and being ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2021.

Kelsey is a unique coach that prioritzes a finishing mentality that is evident in his players. The Cardinals may struggle out of the gate, but quickly turn things around to finish strong. That resiliency is awesome to witness, a huge reason why he won ACC Coach of the Year in 2024.

2025

In 2025, Kelsey compiled the 10th-ranked recruiting class overall, including the third-ranked transfer class from the portal. His big kahuna of a recruit was Mikel Brown Jr., a five-star point guard who is the second-highest-ranked recruit in Louisville basketball history.

He also landed a trio of shooting guards from the transfer portal: Isaac McKneely (Virginia), Ryan Conwell (Xavier), and Adrian Wooley (Kennesaw State). McKneely, Conwell, and Wooley each had their moments in the spotlight during the season. They also helped Louisville advance to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament before coming up short against Michigan State.

The relationship between Brown Jr. and Kelsey was special to watch, even with the smaller sample size that occurred due to a string of injuries for Brown Jr. He comprehends how to push and pull players in the right direction while giving them space to create positive opportunities for themselves.

Kelsey has been recruiting at a blistering pace this year, as he has the 6th-ranked recruiting class overall, plus the number one transfer class across men’s college basketball. His recruiting class is highlighted by the five-star center, Obinna Ezekie Jr., who was the number one center in the country coming out of high school. Kelsey most recently added Boyuan Zhang, a four-star small forward, giving Louisville more wing depth.

The work Kelsey did in the transfer portal was stellar, as he has brought in a slew of high-caliber talent. It all starts with the number one-ranked player in the portal, Flory Bidunga, a center from Kansas. He also lured Jackson Shelstad, a point guard from Oregon, Karter Knox, a small forward from Arkansas, and Alvaro Folgueiras, a power forward from Iowa.

The team Kelsey has assembled is primed to reach the Final Four and even the Championship game of the NCAA Tournament. They for sure will be a team to watch throughout the regular season in the ACC due to the all-around potential that they have.

Looking At The World Through Rose-Colored Glasses

Kelsey has been a savior for the Louisville Cardinals and looks to keep building upon his recruiting masterclass in the “Revi-VILLE”. He is known for his signature Tom Ford glasses that feature a black frame and clear lenses that help him guide the Cardinals courtside. Fans, though, look at him through rose-colored glasses with the amount of work he has already accomplished in a short amount of time. The future is so bright for Kelsey and Louisville that he might have to wear shades.
