The Miami Heat added two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, but despite a weaker Eastern Conference, are still not immediate contenders. The Knicks are coming off a Finals win where they completed the best 16-game stretch in the history of the sport. The Pacers are getting Tyrese Haliburton back after an injury sidelined him for all of 2025-26. “Heat Culture” has made two of the last seven Finals, but this team doesn’t have that core identity as currently constructed.

South Beach Star Power

The history of the Heat acquiring superstar talents is rich over the last 20 years. Shaq in ’04, LeBron and Chris Bosh in 2010, and now Giannis. History says that this is the type of move that produces a championship for Miami. The unfortunate reality is that this current team is not suited to get out of the second round, let alone win a title.

The previous Heat teams had a foundation. It was a young and ascending superstar in Dwyane Wade, combined with seasoned veterans like Gary Payton, Antoine Walker, and Alonzo Mourning in ’06. When the Heatles got together, it was the grouping of three stars in their prime, along with veterans. This Miami team has neither a big three nor a veteran backbone.

Miami Malpractice

The Miami front office drained their available assets to get Antetokounmpo, and now they don’t have the ammo to get another star. Financially, they are already in the first apron, which limits their flexibility in the free agent market. They are now incredibly desperate to bring back Norman Powell, who, while he was their leading scorer last year, is far from a top 50 player in this league.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat

Having a frontcourt including the Greek Freak, Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins does make them intimidating defensively. It also lacks offensive prowess. Giannis will put up 28 per game. Adebayo is only able to provide a marginally efficient 16-18, and Wiggins will be locked into that 15 or 16 range.

This is the best-case scenario as well. Antetokounmpo’s calling card is dominating and driving into the paint. Having Adebayo on the floor at the same time disrupts that, since he shot under 32% this past season. In other words, he’s not a threat from the outside. Whoever is guarding him will have the ability to sag off and provide help for when Giannis is driving to the basket.

This is where bringing back Powell becomes crucial. He finished as the Heat’s top scorer in 2025 with 21.7 points per game. That number was good enough to be 20th in the league, sandwiched right between Paolo Banchero on a wildly underwhelming Magic team and Trey Murphy playing meaningless games for the Pelicans. Miami has no other options, though. They don’t have the assets to go after Devin Booker, and they don’t have the financial ability to lure Austin Reaves away from Los Angeles.

Same Situation For Giannis Antetokounmpo, But With A View

The trade is splashy. Miami is winning the headlines by snagging a superstar, and Antetokounmpo is making waves by joining a sexy organization. The bottom line, however, is that he didn’t end up in a better situation than the one he came from.

The two-time MVP got away from an organization that depleted its assets for the sake of contending and strapped itself financially. He ended up with an organization that depleted its assets and strapped itself financially, but with better weather.

Basketball fans who have been begging to see Giannis play in meaningful basketball games should be outraged that this is the final result. Boston had a deal on the table. Minnesota looked like they could enter the conversation after salary-dumping Julius Randle. The timeline made sense if the Warriors wanted to get aggressive.

The possibilities were there. The upside was real. This league could have been flipped on its head for the next three years. Instead, the NBA gets to see Antetkounmpo limp to the finish line.
