EA Sports has announced and released artwork for the Caleb Williams Madden 27 cover, and it’s impossible not to notice the position he’s in. Doing a split over the city of Chicago looks unnatural, and it is, but it’s not a mistake that he’s posed like that. It is completely intentional to have Williams mimic the iconic Michael Jordan Jumpman logo, and it wasn’t done as a compliment.

To the less skeptical, it may appear to be an homage to the basketball G.O.A.T., since both players’ professional home is the Windy City, and Williams in 2026 may be the most popular athlete in Illinois (similar to Jordan in his playing days). Williams likely played no part in the nefarious nature of the cover, but in order to understand why this was an insult, a person needs to understand the love triangle between EA Sports, 2K Sports, and His Airness.

EA Sports And Michael Jordan

Jordan was featured in early video games on the Nintendo (Jordan vs Bird) and the Sega Genesis (Bulls vs Lakers and Bulls vs Blazers), but at the height of his fame, he opted out of the NBAPA’s shared licensing agreement, and games were not able to feature him. Anyone who used the Chicago Bulls in video games in the mid-1990’s saw the team’s starting shooting guard was “Player 99”.

EA Sports was the first company able to use his image, and did so in NBA Live 2000. NBA Live 2003 was the last time he appeared in that franchise. He disappeared from basketball video games and reappeared on the cover of NBA 2K12. He signed an exclusive deal with 2K Sports and has been in every one of their games to this point.

EA Sports vs 2K Sports

There used to be more than one pro football game to choose from. As the gaming systems became more advanced and graphics started to go out of control, Madden and NFL 2K ruled the landscape. In order to combat the big bad EA monster, 2K lowered the price of their game to $19.99. At the time, Madden was going for $49.99, and gamers began to go the cheaper route.

The thing is, the game wasn’t just cheaper, it was better. Madden has always had a reputation for being glitchy and unrealistic, and NFL 2K wasn’t any of those things. The final installment, NFL 2K5, is widely considered the best football simulation game ever created, even over Madden in the 2020’s. Sadly, EA Sports signed an exclusive deal with the NFL so that no other company could make a simulation-style NFL game. To this day, fans hope that one day the deal will expire, and NFL 2K will come back.

The new Madden cover is not an homage to a Chicago legend; it’s EA Sports sticking their tongue out at 2K from behind their dad. They know that 2K is bigger, faster, and better in every way than them, but there’s nothing they can do without licensing rights. Williams may have a career year in 2026; it’s impossible to know. One thing that is 100% guaranteed, though, is that with no competition, EA Sports is going to roll out the same version of Madden they’ve been force-feeding the public for two decades. It will just feature a pretty new wrapper.
