The sports media outlets are announcing a Bobby Slowik Dolphins hire, which is really
more of a promotion for Slowik, who was already on the staff as the team’s passing
game coordinator. His new role will be offensive coordinator under the new head coach, Jeff
Hafley. It’s on brand for Miami, as they pair an unproven coordinator with an unproven
head coach. What will that prove?
Slowik was a passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, and
helped a quarterback room led by Jimmy Garoppolo to complete 66.7% of their passes
for 4,221 yards (12th in the league. The following year, he got rookie year Brock Purdy
to finish the season 5-0, and the team completed 66% of their passes that year. When
Demeco Ryans left San Fran to be the head coach for the Houston Texans, he brought
Slowik along as his CC.
2023 was when the 38-year-old earned his stripes. He called plays for the rookie
quarterback, and second overall pick CJ Stroud, who won offensive rookie of the year.
Stroud also had a streak where he didn’t throw a single interception, and finished the
season completing 62.8% of his passes for 3,526 yards.

Slowik was interviewed for several head coaching jobs, but returned to play-calling for
the Texans in 2024. Things did not go as smoothly, with Stroud regressing in accuracy
and yardage, while being sacked a league-leading 52 times. Ryans fired his OC, who
took a demotion in Miami as the passing game coordinator.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 67.7% of his passes on Slowik’s plays,
but forjust 190 yards per game. He also had 20 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. On
most teams, this would not be enough to get a promotion, but in Miami, under Hafley,
it’s exactly what they are looking for.
Bobby Slowik Dolphins Season Could Be A Success
There are no guarantees in life, and even fewer in the NFL. Maybe the combination of
an underqualified head coach with an underperforming coordinator could lead the
Dolphins to their second undefeated season in franchise history. It’s unlikely, but
possible.
The most likely outcome, however, is that the Patriots will win the division again, the
Bills will finish second (as long as they don’t hire Philip Rivers as their HC), and the
Dolphins will battle for last place in the AFC East with the New York Jets. Phins fans
should be crossing their fingers and saying their prayers, or 2026 could make 2025 look
like a dream come true.
