Ravens WR Zay Flowers Harbaugh comments made some waves on a podcast recently, shining a light on the NFL’s softness problem. On the “Fourth and South” podcast episode released this week, Flowers alleged that former coach John Harbaugh’s practices were the reason that Baltimore has so many injuries: “That’s why we had a lot of injuries, because of how we practiced, how we went. The load was heavy.” His statement is a microcosm of current NFL players who crave historic contracts and massive guarantees, but aren’t willing to make the sacrifices or take the accountability to be successful in the league.

Zay Flowers Harbaugh Softness Problem In A Nutshell

Flower’s insinuation that hard practices increased injuries for the Ravens is not only something that lacks tangible evidence, but it’s also a moot point. Baltimore was one of 12 teams in 2025 with less than 200 games missed due to injury, which destroys the narrative that the Ravens deal with an unusual amount of injuries. The receiver also contradicts himself on the podcast, as he says that Harbaugh “is good at getting you ready to go play”. Well, which is it? Were Harbaugh’s practices good for the team or not?

This debate over Baltimore’s practices leads to a bigger discussion of how soft the NFL players have become. There has not been live contact during OTAs since 2011, which has negatively impacted the quality of offensive line play in the league. The NFLPA is up in arms over the potential of an 18th regular-season game, even with player contracts soaring to outrageous heights.

Even the playing surface is a point of contention, as turf fields are under fire from players who allege that more non-contact injuries happen on turf. While there are some valid concerns from the players’ point of view, these things show that submitting to player demands doesn’t necessarily make the game better.

It goes much deeper with the NFL’s foray into softness. The Guardian Caps are an abomination to both long-time football fans and former players alike. The league has been creating rules that favored offenses since the 1970’s, but banning hip-drop tackles is a bridge too far. Defenses need to be able to play the game, which is hard to do with the current rules and their enforcement. The NFL is wildly different from what it was even ten years ago, and someone needs to stand up for the soul of the sport before it becomes unrecognizable and softer than Charmin.

There are not enough NFL players who care about winning, and that point is evident in Flowers’s comments. This podcast appearance reeks of sour grapes on the receiver’s part. The Ravens’ smear campaign on Harbaugh won’t matter in January, since New York is in a better position for a playoff berth than Baltimore is (despite the team clad in purple potentially having a strong draft.). Instead of building their brand on podcasts, players should be building themselves to be champions and stop crashing out over things that don’t matter in the big picture.
