The McDavid Butterfly Effect Will Begin Soon

The Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup, Connor McDavid, Anaheim Ducks

With a maximum of two games remaining in the first-round series between the Oilers and the Ducks, Edmonton’s offseason could start relatively soon. Even if they do come back to defeat Anaheim, McDavid’s future could still be in question. It is imperative for Edmonton that they keep their superstar happy and surrounded by a cast that can produce.

If Edmonton does retain McDavid until the full length of his extension concludes in 2028, it is unlikely they will have fixed all of the issues in just two seasons. He will be 31 by then and will likely still be as effective on the ice, but he would have to play through another rebuild, and that may not be part of his plan. McDavid may ask to be traded sooner rather than later, thus speeding up the butterfly effect that begins with the conclusion of this first-round playoff series.

McDavid may choose to stay and re-sign with the Oilers even after his extension lapses. He was drafted by them in 2015 and has always been a huge part of their organization. He is the captain of the team, and his leadership has always been on display. This was especially true during the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, when he lit a fire under his teammates with an expletive-laden speech in the locker room when they were down in the series 2-0.

The Oilers were on the precipice of history in 2024 and 2025, but this season, things have been lackluster. They must improve this offseason, or it could be a split between hockey’s biggest star and a franchise that needs him to remain in contention. It will be a highly intriguing offseason for the NHL as a whole, especially in Edmonton, where a single decision could alter the future shape of the league.
