With the 2026 NFL season officially underway, the San Francisco 49ers are high on the watch list. New additions to the team have highlighted the offseason, while the injury bug has also crept back into play. Having played their first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans, San Francisco seems to be trending in the right direction.
Strong showings from San Francisco’s recent draft class stole the show, answering some questions left from last season. The 49ers must address their injury issues before the regular season, though, as players have already missed time from training camp. There will be some bumps in the road, but this newly created roster seems up for the ride.
San Francisco 49ers Rookies On Pace
What seemed to be a questionable draft class for San Francisco has now put the league on notice. Second-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling seems to be the newest bright spot in the receiver room. He hauled in an impressive seven catches for 63 yards and looked comfortable doing so. Stribling is hitting his marks faster than some in the league expected, adding depth to a position room looking for bodies. He could be expected to fill in for third-year Ricky Pearsall, who recently had season-ending surgery. With a bigger role than earlier expected, Stribling has a green light many rookies won’t have this season.
The true identity of the 49ers is found on the defensive side of the ball, and in most years within the defensive line. In a position where production has lacked, fourth-round pick Gracen Halton is aiming to be the missing piece. He has shown an ability to get in the backfield at will, racking up tackles for losses. With veteran Nick Bosa aiming for a return, Halton can add dominance in the middle. Immediate rookie production has been a surprising but welcome addition for the organization. Understanding that injuries have already sidelined those like Mike Evans, Nick Bosa, and Pearsall, it’s now a next-man-up mentality.
Injuries Live In San Francisco

If there is one team in the NFL that has had the unfortunate case of the injury bug, it’s the 49ers. The 2025 season had its fair share of season-ending injuries getting in the way of true success. It seems like this 2026 training camp has been filled with the same misfortunes. When healthy, San Francisco is a Super Bowl contender; when dealing with injuries, it becomes virtually out of reach.
Most recently, Pearsall went down needing season-ending surgery to fix the PCL in his right knee, another blow to his short career. It’s situations like this that have been the deciding factor in a deep playoff run or a possible regular-season ending. True depth is now something the 49ers may lack, with the need to throw rookies into the fire early on. San Francisco will not be contenders in the later part of the season without having a roster able to withstand wear and tear.
The current necessity for the 49ers is simple: get healthy. With so much talent brought in during the offseason, it goes to waste when those depended on cannot finish a season. The rookie class for San Francisco will be called upon throughout the season and asked to deliver, and veteran signing Deebo Samuel will be leaned on for offensive leadership. This 49ers roster has the skill to go all the way; it will be interesting to see how they navigate a long season of NFC competition.
