The 2025-26 NBA Finals and season have come to an end, making it clear that one organization has potential but still has room to grow. The San Antonio Spurs showcased potential talent for years to come, while also putting on display their unfortunate downfall of youth. In many cases, a young basketball team is a plus, yet it proved detrimental against the New York Knicks. A lack of veteran leadership plagued San Antonio when it mattered most, causing them to miss out on a sixth NBA championship. Having such a young roster resulted in the Spurs blowing multiple 15-point leads and suffering a 4-1 series loss.

San Antonio Spurs Youth A Downfall

The NBA is such a dynamic money-making machine because of the numerous young players drafted every year. With that, there are young teams formed like the Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and even the Houston Rockets. A downfall of this creation is the lack of strong veteran leadership in the locker room.

San Antonio had a strong chance to knock off the Knicks, but couldn’t execute when it mattered most. At one point, they lost a 29-point lead and allowed New York to steal the game. Results like that scream not only inexperience in big-time moments but also a lack of ability to regroup as a team.

The oldest player for the Spurs is Mason Plumlee, at only 36-years-old. Although a veteran in his own right, he did not hold an ideal place of leadership. San Antonio cannot depend solely on 22-year-old Victor Wembanyama, since he’s still trying to find his footing within the league. Having the ability to go down the bench and put forth productive veteran players will be the difference.

Learning Lesson For The Future

Although nothing is guaranteed, the Spurs are the betting favorites to win the West next season. Taking this series loss as a lesson will be a blessing in disguise. Now they know what it takes on all levels to secure a championship. If able to make another run, they understand no lead is a comfortable one, and that veteran leadership is needed.

Since San Antonio will still be one of the youngest teams in the league next season, they will mature on a different level. One that displays the understanding of closing out a full game and not getting comfortable with any lead. It’s important that the roster buys into what could have been and is still a strong possibility. While still showcasing their youth and athleticism, understanding how to win will be at the forefront.

Losing an NBA finals in the fashion that the Spurs did is never easy, but it may be the wake-up call they needed. This organization has the tools to be dominant for years to come, but only if used in the correct manner. Now with much-deserved downtime, they will head back to the drawing board, as the upcoming 2027 roster may look different when the time comes as well. Talks have all already heated up surrounding a potential removal of head coach Mitch Johnson.

On the flip side, the roster will be adding the 20th pick in the 2026 draft, another addition to a championship-minded organization. Those under contract will be expected back, while free agents like Harrison Barnes and Julian Champagne will be exploring their options. Barners may be expected to sign a veteran minimum, whereas Champagne has made an argument for others to look deeper into his availability. It will be an interesting offseason for the Spurs and a hopeful turnaround for a squad that just came up short.
