The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators agreed to a trade involving Brady Tkachuk, a move that will help the Panthers bounce back from a disappointing season.

Florida gave up the No. 9 pick and the newly acquired No. 25 pick in the upcoming draft, a 2029 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick to reunite the Tkachuk brothers, in an attempt to get back to
the playoffs after a one-year absence.

How Will The Panthers Make The Playoffs?

The main reason Florida missed the playoffs this past season was due to injuries. Captain Aleksander Barkov tore his ACL and MCL during training camp, Matthew Tkachuk missed the first half of the season following hernia surgery, and Brad Marchand played just 52 games, the fewest he’s participated in since 2012.

The Panthers have also been quite active over the past three seasons, playing in 314 games (the most in NHL history over a three-season span).

Tkachuk will not only rejuvenate the team but also be an immediate injection of talent. He’s been Ottawa’s captain for five years, leading them to the playoffs in back-to-back years. In 572 career games over six seasons, he’s racked up 463 points. He’s also found previous success playing with his brother, winning the
gold medal for Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The trade’s timing is perfect, as the Tkachuk brothers will be joined by a healthy Barkov and Marchand this season.

How Does Brady Tkachuk Fit In The Lineup?

The projected lineup will place Sam Bennett playing center with the Tkachuk brothers on either side of him on the second line. If that becomes the case, it’s one of the most talented and physical lines in hockey. Both brothers are grinders who love to use their bodies, while Bennett is hated around the league for his hits and physicality.

The first line will look like Barkov taking face-offs with Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart on the wings; a top line that is dangerous offensively and defensively. Marchand, Anton Lundell, and Eetu Luostarinen make up a projected third line.

Brady Tkachuk’s aggressive play style fits perfectly with the ‘Bad Boys’ of the NHL. He has the most hits (16) in a single game since hits were tracked, and is well accustomed to dropping his gloves for a fight. His brother has also been known to throw a punch, while Marchand and Bennett have been called “rats” for their dirty play.

What Does The Trade Mean For The Panthers?

Florida is all in on this season. Trading three first-round picks and a second for a single player is a blockbuster move that jeopardizes the future. The Panthers believe that their roster, made up mostly of veterans, can still make a push for the Cup, especially after acquiring the former Senators star.

General Manager Bill Zito has made this move before, acquiring veteran Marchand from the Boston Bruins in 2025 before winning the championship. The biggest hole on the roster is the goalie, since Sergei Bobrovsky appears to be finding a new home this season, and the newly acquired Tkachuk’s $8.2 million AAV doesn’t help that. Regardless of who’s in net, though, the entire lineup in front of him will be stacked with talent and a desire to return to playoff hockey.
