Heading into the 2026 college football season, Trinidad Chambliss should stand out as a Heisman frontrunner. Notre Dame’s CJ Carr and Texas’s Arch Manning currently sit as the betting favorites, with Oregon’s Dante Moore firmly in the mix after passing up the NFL draft to return to school.
Chambliss enters the season with the fifth-best odds (+1300 on FanDuel) despite producing monster numbers last year, throwing for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns with only three interceptions. He added 527 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground while leading Ole Miss to the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Projections surrounding the other contenders are one thing, but Chambliss already has the production to prove it. That alone should make him the Heisman frontrunner entering 2026.
No Moment Is Too Big For Chambliss
Heisman winners do more than impress with their stats. The award is about what athletes do when the whole country is watching them. Chambliss already has those “big game” performances on his resume.
In the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Georgia, Chambliss completed 30 of 46 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns. He showcased his ability to stay calm under pressure, converting on many third and fourth downs where the play seemed to be blown up. This helped Ole Miss defeat Georgia 39-34, avenging a regular-season loss to the Bulldogs.
Across his three playoff games, Chambliss didn’t throw a single interception. His composure stood out the entire season, but especially when the Rebels needed it most. That should carry significant weight in terms of the Heisman race.
Unique Skillset, Built For College Football
At six-foot-one, 200 lbs, Chambliss isn’t necessarily the ideal NFL quarterback prospect compared to the likes of Manning and Carr. What goes undervalued when it comes to the Rebel quarterback is his speed and ability to improvise.
Chambliss’ legs are a benefit in situations where the pocket breaks down, or he’s under pressure. The ability to escape, stay calm, and analyze a defense all in a split second are traits that separate him from the rest of the field. There may be quarterbacks with stronger arms or more impressive measurables, but Chambliss impresses with his mind. There are few answers defenses have for a player with his composure.
Production Should Matter More Than Projections:
Preseason expectations have a tendency to highlight what a player could become rather than what a player has already established. Manning threw for 3,163 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. His combination of physical intangibles and NFL pedigree makes him a top storyline when it comes to the Heisman Trophy every year.
Chambliss had almost 800 more passing yards than Manning, and more importantly, he led Ole Miss to a deep playoff run and showed up in the big games, something Manning has struggled with.
2025 stats don’t guarantee another impressive season from Chambliss. Carr, Manning, Moore, or a dark horse candidate could certainly establish themselves as a better player by the end of the year. Preseason expectations shouldn’t solely be based on anticipated improvement of players, but instead on what they’ve already proved.
The Heisman Race Should Start With Chambliss
Draft evaluators have much to consider when it comes to quarterbacks. A player’s age, physical traits, and long-term development are all factors that go into their grading. Manning, Moore, or Carr may be better NFL prospects than Chambliss, but that doesn’t make them better college quarterbacks.
Chambliss has proven his ability to compete against the top competition on the biggest stages. Handling pressure was one of his strong suits, making it exciting to see how he performs this season with such high expectations. Last season’s numbers do not entitle Chambliss to anything this upcoming year.
Until another quarterback takes control of the Heisman race, there is no reason to place projections ahead of what players have already proven. Chambliss has already built the resume of a Heisman quarterback. Entering the 2026 season, the race for college football’s most prestigious award should start with him.
