The top cornerbacks in the NFL change every year, as do any top positional list. Five years ago, the best corners in the league were considered to be guys like Jalen Ramsey, Trevon Diggs, Marshon Lattimore, and Jaire Alexander. Now most of those cornerbacks are fighting for a roster spot and are on their third or fourth team. This shows how volatile the NFL is year in and year out. Below are the top 5 cornerbacks heading into the 2026 season. This list is based on their career accolades and how they performed last year.
Just like any ranking list, there will be players that won’t make it who deserve their flowers. Some honorable mentions are guys like Quinyon Mitchell of the Philadelphia Eagles, Trent McDuffie of the Los Angeles Rams, Sauce Gardner of the Indianapolis Colts, and Jaycee Horn of the Carolina Panthers. All guys worthy of being in a top 10 list but just not there yet for the top five.
5. Denzel Ward
Denzel Ward has consistently been one of the league’s top corners over the past five years. He is 29 and coming off a Pro Bowl year, and he’s the oldest corner on this list, earning the respect to be seen as a top corner in the league. Ward is a five-time Pro Bowler with 18 career interceptions, and despite being on a bad football team over the past couple of years, he has still managed to stand out and perform at a high level every year.
After the recent trade of Myles Garrett and the ongoing QB dilemma, the Cleveland Browns don’t seem to be a team that can compete this year, barring any surprises. Ward will most likely be in line for another losing season, but repeating as a top CB won’t be out of the ordinary for him and will be another example of why he’s one of the best in the league.
4. Devon Witherspoon
Devon Witherspoon is coming off arguably his best season as a pro and is only in his third year in the league. He has made the Pro Bowl all three years of his career and is coming off his first All-Pro season. He’s still just 25 years old and is coming off a Super Bowl win in which he recorded a sack and only allowed two receptions for 16 yards.
Witherspoon recently agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks that made him the highest-paid CB in the NFL. Assuming he continues to get better and carries on playing like a top CB, his contract will seem like an underpay, and the Seahawks will look like geniuses for paying one of the top CBs in the league early. Overall, Witherspoon seems to be on a good trajectory and could be even higher on the list in the future.
3. Christian Gonzalez
Christian Gonzalez probably has the best chance to be number one on this list in the next couple of years. He was a second-team All-Pro in 2024 and a Pro Bowler in 2025, and is coming off a season in which he helped lead the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance. He dominated in the playoffs, only allowing 14 total completions and recording one interception and seven pass deflections.
Gonzalez is only 24 years old, the youngest corner on this list, and is entering his fourth year in the NFL. Not only is he expected to soon be the highest-paid CB in the NFL with his looming contract situation, but he could soon be the best. With the Patriots looking to make another Super Bowl run, a repeat year of being a top CB for Gonzalez will help substantially.
2. Derek Stingley
Derek Stingley is not only on one of the best defenses in the NFL; it could be argued that he is the best CB in the NFL. He is a two-time first-team All-Pro and a two-time Pro Bowler who, in his four years since entering the league, has a whopping 14 career interceptions, which is the second most since 2023.
Stingley has helped lead the Houston Texans to the playoffs the last three years, and all resulted in divisional round losses. The Texans defense led by Stingley was one of the league’s best last year, and another season like that by the All-Pro will only strengthen his case for potentially being the best CB in the NFL.
1. Patrick Surtain II
Since entering the league, Patrick Surtain II has been regarded as the best cornerback in football every year, and this past season was no different. He is a two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler. In 2024, he became only the seventh cornerback in league history to win Defensive Player of the Year.
Surtain has lined up against some of the best receivers in the NFL, like Ja’Marr Chase or George Pickens, and has shut them down. He also recently helped lead the Denver Broncos to an AFC Championship appearance in which he played a spectacular game. Surtain has been in the league for five years and has already surpassed expectations, so it will be interesting to see how much better he can be.
