The New York Giants are going through a transition in 2026, but Odell Beckham Jr.’s return could elevate them to legitimate contenders. It’s been two years since fans last saw OBJ on a football field, but he’s coming into a great situation. John Harbaugh and his regime are bringing some much-needed toughness to Big Blue, while the team has an exciting young core to build around (despite the drama around their starting QB this off-season). This could be the perfect time for Beckham Jr. to return to the Giants and make one last run at a championship.

Why Beckham’s Return To The Giants Makes Them Contenders

The time off between the last time that Beckham Jr. played in the NFL and now might end up being a positive for the returning Giant. He hasn’t been the same player since tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl as a Ram, but he had a strong showing with the Ravens in 2023 with 565 receiving yards (his most since 2019). The following season was a forgettable campaign with the Dolphins, which was the last time anybody has seen him play. The extended break has given him a chance to get his body right for one more run at a Lombardi Trophy with the team that drafted him.

The reunion between Beckham Jr. and the Giants give the former LSU Tiger a chance to break records before he calls it a career. He needs six receptions to move into third place for most catches in franchise history, only trailing Tiki Barber and Amani Toomer. 25 passes caught would put him at 600 receptions all-time, 13 receiving yards would put him at 8,000 for his career. Another receiving touchdown would put OBJ in the 60-touchdown club. A productive final campaign for the Giants could be enough to solidify his Hall of Fame candidacy.

The addition of OBJ helped elevate New York’s receiving corps to one of the best in the league. Despite Malik Nabers, a top five NFL wide-out, being questionable for Week 1, Darius Slayton brings production and chemistry with Jaxson Dart. Darnell Mooney and JuJu Smith-Shuster add depth and veteran leadership, while Calvin Austin III can stretch the field vertically. Add in rookie Malachi Fields to the mix, and New York has arguably the deepest WR room in the entire league.

Another piece of the puzzle to Beckham Jr. returning to form is the offensive scheme. New offensive coordinator Matt Nagy comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, so the offense is expected to have Air Raid and run-pass-option concepts. This will help elevate Dart’s play, while also scheming receivers who don’t have elite speed open. This offense is the best-case scenario for OBJ, where he doesn’t have to play every snap and his decline in speed shouldn’t be a factor.

Odell Beckham Jr.'s return to the Giants elevates them to contenders.

Speculating what kind of numbers Beckham Jr. will have in 2026 is a challenge, because there are several unknowns. Potentially missing Nabers in the early part of the season dramatically affects how the offense operates, since there isn’t a receiver on the roster that can dominate one-on-one match-ups consistently. With Nabers, OBJ gets significantly more opportunities for big plays with the young superstar commanding the defense’s attention. Even then, Beckham Jr. is unlikely to see a large volume of targets when the offense is designed to distribute the ball evenly.

Fortunately for Beckham Jr., he will get chances to post big numbers on middling defenses. In the NFC East, the Commanders underwhelmed on defense in 2025, and that could be a trend that continues this season. The Giants also face the Titans, Cardinals, and Saints early in the season, so big receiving totals are possible for OBJ. He probably won’t be a WR1 in fantasy football, but 500 receiving yards and five touchdowns wouldn’t be a bad year.
