Nothing gets a fan base excited like a football player with potential, and maybe no receiver since Calvin Johnson in 2007 has come into the NFL with more potential than Marvin Harrison Jr. The problem with displaying the dominance in college that Harrison did is that even if that player is a bust (which MHJ is), the nostalgia of a few years ago deludes fans into thinking he can reach his potential for their team.
A classic example of this is New England Patriots fans. Their organization has been starved for wide receiver talent since they rolled out Randy Moss the same season that the Lions drafted the aforementioned Megatron. For that reason, they have delusions of grandeur about any receiver who has had at least one good game joining their team and leading them to Super Bowl glory.
It wasn’t long ago (2018) that Josh Gordon was touted as the Patriots’ next Moss. In 2013, he showed enormous promise, hauling in 87 catches for 1,646 yards. The next five seasons were plagued by injuries and drug suspensions. When he finally returned to full-time action, the Patriots made their move, and while Gordon played decently (40 catches for 720 yards in 11 games), he never recaptured his former glory.
Patriots fans have begun to dream again, with a meme circulating among the usual suspects on social media featuring Harrison in a Patriots uniform next to AJ Brown asking, “How amazing would this be?” The answer: About as amazing as Brown and Kayshon Boutte. Unlike Moss and Gordon, Harrison has never had an elite season in the NFL.
Marvin Harrison Jr Is A Bust

Despite the fact that he hauled in a touchdown pass today against the New York Giants, Harrison still has just five grabs through four games this season. That’s good for sixth place on a 1-3 team. It’s not like he’s having an unusually bad year either. In 2025, Harrison had a Josh Gordon-esque 41 receptions in 12 games. He clearly has not lived up to expectations since the Cardinals took him with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Speaking of how Harrison compares to former Patriots receiver Boutte, the two have almost identical stats from the start of 2025. Boutte has 42 receptions for 666 yards (15.86 per reception) and six touchdowns, while Harrison has hauled in 46 receptions for 699 yards (15.2 per reception) and five touchdowns. New England parted with Boutte for a sixth-round pick, so why would they give up that or more to get a player of equal ability?
It once again goes back to the talent displayed in college. Harrison was a standout for Ohio State, so some fans (not the educated ones) think that the change of scenery from Columbus to Arizona is the reason for his falloff, and a new change would get him back to where he was. The reality is that it’s much easier to dominate 17-year-old cornerbacks in the Big 10 than it is grown men in the NFL. This is the best version of Harrison that fans will ever see.
If a team wants to take a flyer on him and give up what the Texans gave up for Boutte, fine. That’s a low-risk investment. Any Arizona fans thinking the team should get back a second-round pick for him, and any fans of other teams thinking he is Jerry Rice disguised as Kadarius Toney, are delusional. He’s a player on pace for 19 catches if he stays healthy all year, and he isn’t worth more than a sixth-rounder. Plain and simple, Harrison is a bust.
