More than a Cup of Coffee

Every single one of the first overall picks over the past 10 years is currently on an active MLB roster. Remarkably, some, who for a time, were considered a bust, such as Mickey Moniak, have seen a resurgence in 2026.
Only by tracing back to 2014 (Brady Aiken), who never pitched in MLB, or 2013 (Mark Appel), who made just a handful of appearances, can a claim of a definite miss be justified.
Those two picks stand out as an anomaly given that 2010, 2011, and 2012 brought in succession Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Correa to the world of MLB. All of whom will garner serious consideration for enshrinement in Cooperstown someday.
Perhaps it is the elevated, intensified programming across travel and high school ball, or the NCAA Division 1 programs that now compete at a level comparable to the lower minor leagues. Whatever it is, it appears the days of the 1-1 bust are long gone.
Willits, Tearing Up The Basepaths and Hitting .300
Now, in 2026, we wait and watch the ‘25 first pick Eli Willits’ ascension through the minor leagues. How long will the Nationals hold off on calling the speedy, slick fielding Willits to help them out?
“I set a goal to be in the big leagues by the time I’m 20, and that’s something I’m really excited to do. Hopefully, I get out there and start playing well, and that can be something that I can accomplish in the next few years.” – Eli Willits
The projected first pick in 2026, UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky continues to power the top-ranked Bruins towards what is expected to be a deep run in Omaha at the College World Series. Will he need a break after an exhausting College Championship run? It’s doubtful. These guys want to rise to the top as soon as humanly possible.
Final Take on the Draft 1-1 in MLB
It’s baseball, and it’s better than it has ever been. Superior athletes who are conditioned to achieve one goal, and that is to make it to the MLB. If recent 1-1’s are any evidence of a pattern, that goal appears almost certain to be achieved sooner rather than later.
