Each time the Ducks have been in position to rise to the top spot, they run into a team that is more physical in the trenches, bullying an Oregon defense built on speed. To address those issues, the team has been transitioning to a more physical brand of football, including moving from the PAC 12 to the BIG 10. The hiring of head coach Dan Lanning, who made his name in college football as a defensive coordinator in the SEC, has helped transform the program into a team that can compete against physical opponents while continuing to field one of the most athletic rosters in the country.
In the last two seasons, the Ducks have picked up big wins against Penn State, Ohio State, and Iowa. In their first season as part of the BIG 10, they capped off a 12-0 regular season with a win over Penn State in the conference championship game. In 2025, Lanning’s team made a run to the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs after defeating James Madison and Texas Tech. Oregon Ducks Ready To Win the BIG 10 Again
For a program to be a legitimate championship contender in the BIG 10 conference,it needs a dynamic offense capable of winning games with a strong running game and an explosive passing game. This season, the Ducks will be loaded at the quarterback position with starter Dante Moore and backup Raiola. They will be targeting one of the most dynamic groups of wide receivers in the country led by Evan Stewart, Dakorien Moore, and Jeremiah McClellan.
Along with all the components needed for a high-flying passing attack, the Ducks also have a pair of running backs capable of producing big plays and providing situational power. The running game will be split between sophomores Dierre Hill Jr. and Jordon Davison. Oregon is also working to replace its offensive tackles and reload at tight end heading into 2026. How quickly the Ducks’ running game develops chemistry will determine the team’s ceiling in 2026.
On defense, Oregon brings back a talented group of defensive linemen. Bear Alexander and A’Mauri Washington will stuff the run on the interior, while a combination of Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti teams up to terrorize quarterbacks across the BIG 10 on the edges.
In the defensive secondary, the Ducks have brought in Koi Perich from Minnesota. The team is expected to rebuild its linebacker position, but it has young players ready to step in and grow into leadership roles. Oregon is a virtual lock for another 10-plus-win season in 2026, but that has become the bare minimum standard for Lanning’s program. For this season to be considered a success, they will need to win the BIG 10 for a second time and reach the National Championship game in the CFP.
This time the Ducks will be in position to finish their climb to the top of the college football world with their first modern national championship. For that achievement to come to fruition, Oregon will need to stay healthy and play consistent football every week of the season. For a program that has done an outstanding job of building a brand over the last 20 years, a national championship will be the crowning achievement, solidifying the Ducks’ position as a blue-blood college football program.
